Terms of Use

Lagniappe Law Lab ("LLL”, “we”, or “our”) is a nonprofit legal aid technology consultancy funded by the Louisiana Bar Foundation “LBF” in the Greater New Orleans Area. 


These Terms of Use describes the acceptable uses and disclaimers for louisianalegalnavigator.org and apps.louisianalegalnavigator.org (“Websites”) and the guided interviews available on our Websites.


Eligibility and Agreement

You must be over the age of 13 to use our Websites and guided interviews (collectively, “Services”). By using our Websites and guided interviews, you accept and agree to these Terms of Use. 

Acceptable Use

LLL's Websites and guided interviews are provided as a free service for those wishing to better understand their legal rights and responsibilities in Louisiana, and find appropriate legal resources and referrals. We anticipate our primary users to be self-represented litigants and attorneys or trusted-intermediaries who may be assisting self-represented litigants.


Examples of unacceptable uses of our Services are listed below:

Commercial use. Use of our Websites and guided interviews for fee is not allowed. You may not resell access to our Services. You may not duplicate these Services for use in Louisiana. You may not duplicate these Services to sell access for a fee.

Unauthorized practice of law. Do not use our Websites and guided interviews to conduct in the unauthorized practice of law or to assist anyone else in the unauthorized practice of law.

Excessive use and abuse. Excessive use, abuse, or any use that interferes others’ use of our Services is not allowed.

Disclaimers

We do our best to maintain our Website and guided interviews and to keep them up to date. However, please use your best judgement when using our Services.


When using our Services, remember the list of disclaimers below:

Changes to the law. Changes to the law or court or local variations may make any content accessed by our Websites and guided interviews unenforceable.

Legal advice. Our Services are not legal advice. If you are seeking legal advice, consult a lawyer.

Privilege. Information you enter on our Websites and guided interviews may not be protected by attorney-client privilege or the attorney work product doctrine.

Technical support. LLL does not offer technical support for our Services.

No Warranty

Our Websites and guided interviews offer with no warranty, including no implied warranty of fitness. LLL disclaims all liability for your use of information on our Websites and guided interviews and your reliance on the forms created by a guided interview.


Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless LLL and the Louisiana Bar Foundation for all claims arising out of your use and reliance on our Websites and guided interviews.


Changes to these Terms of Use

LLL may modify these Terms of Use at any time with or without notice. You are responsible for checking these Terms of Use periodically to inform yourself of any changes. Your continued use of our Websites and guided interviews after the changes have been made will constitute your acceptance of the changes.


Governing Law


These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of the State of Louisiana. 

If any term set out in these Terms of Use is held to be invalid, unenforceable or illegal for any reason, the remaining terms will continue in full force. 

Privacy Policy

Lagniappe Law Lab ("LLL", “us”, “we”, or “our”) understands and respects the need for privacy and data protection. This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes the information that we collect, the purposes for which it is used, and your choices regarding its use.

This Policy applies to louisianalegalnavigator.org and apps.louisianalegalnavigator.org (“Websites”) and the guided interviews available on our Websites. We encourage you to read this Policy in full to understand our privacy practices when using our Websites and guided interviews (collectively, “Services”).

Information We Collect

LLL collects information directly from you or through your use of our Website and guided interviews. We collect the following information:

  • Information You Provide. We collect information directly from you when you fill out our guided interviews or when you email us. For example, if you fill out a court form using our guided interviews, we may collect, for example, your: Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address, and Any other information you may provide.
  • Information We Collect Automatically. When you use our Services, we automatically collect Usage Analytics and Device Information. LLL collects information to improve and optimize our Services, such as browser type, and usage details, such as time, frequency, and use pattern. We also collect device information, like IP address, device type, operating system, manufacturer, model, and model number, and unique device identifiers.
  • Information We Receive from 3rd Parties. Unless you are working with an attorney or other trusted intermediary to complete our guided interviews, LLL does not receive information about you from third parties.
  • Information from Cookies and Other Tracking Technologies. We collect cookies from your web browser to save your answers in our guided interviews. This allows you to leave our guided interviews and to return to our Websites to complete the form.   • "Do-Not-Track". We do not track or respond to web browser "Do-Not-Track" signals.

How We Use Information

The information LLL collects is primarily intended to provide legal content and resources, and to complete court forms. We use collected information to do the following: 

  • Communicate With You. We may contact you to respond to your inquiries or requests when you email us. This includes, for example, replying to questions about our Services.
  • Provide and Improve Our Services. We use aggregated, anonymized information to analyze how you use our Websites and guided interviews and to improve functionality, quality, and user experience. Anonymized information does not include any information that can identify you from other users.
  • Profiling and Automated Decision Making. LLL does not use your information for profiling and automated decision making.

How We Share Information

LLL does not sell information about you to advertisers or other third parties. We share information about you with third parties only as described below:

Consent.  LLL only shares your information with third parties with your consent.

  • Other People. If you share a link to your guided interview, any person with the link can access the information you provided in the guided interview.

Research. LLL may use anonymized information for research to understand how to better provide legal services to the citizens of Louisiana. Anonymized information may be shared with academic researchers and community partners to help with this goal. Anonymized information does not include any information that can identify you from other users.

Public Authorities. We disclose your information when disclosure is: (1) reasonably necessary to comply with any applicable law, regulation, subpoena, legal process, or enforceable governmental request; (2) necessary to enforce this Policy; (3) required to enforce our contractual obligations, including investigation of potential violations; or (4) necessary to protect against harm to the rights, property, or safety of LLL, you, or the public as required or permitted by law.

Sale of Information. LLL does not sell your information to third parties.

How We Store and Protect Your Data

LLL retains your information for as long as is necessary for us to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce rights, or as is reasonably necessary to provide our Services.

We use reasonable and appropriate physical, technical, and administrative safeguards to protect your information from unauthorized use, access, loss, misuse, alteration, or destruction.  Authorized employees of LLL may access the information you provide in our guided interviews to improve our Services or at your request. Despite our security safeguards, it is impossible to guarantee absolute security in all situations. Your Choices

You can access, correct, or delete your information by contacting us using the information in the “Contact Us” section below. We require you to verify your identity before we respond to any of your requests. We will respond to your request within 30 days of receiving your request.


Third-Party Services, Applications, and Websites

Certain third-party services, websites, or applications you use or navigate to from our Websites may have separate user terms and privacy policies independent of this Policy. This includes, for example, websites owned and operated by our partners. 

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party services or applications. We recommend carefully reviewing the user terms and privacy statements of each third-party service, website, and/or application before use.

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”)

Our Websites and guided interviews are not directed to children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 16. 


Changes to this Privacy Policy


We periodically update this Policy to describe new features, products, or services, and how those changes affect our use of your information. 

If we make significant changes to this Policy, we will post those changes through a prominent notice on our Websites. If you do not agree to the changes made to this Privacy Policy, we recommend that you stop using our Services. We encourage you to review this Policy for updates each time you use our Websites and guided interviews.
